Last monday 14 players attended the tournament organized in Firenze (Italy). The group stage was interesting and group 1 was some kind of "group od death" with Luca Pini, Davide Visani and Simone Faraoni playing together. These three players were in a great day as Pini later beat Visani in the final while Faraoni won the consolation final. Well done also to Sergio Robertiello and Marco Bonciani for reaching the semi-finals.

Luca Parodi, tournament winner
24 players attended the "Coppa delle Alpi" held on wednesday in Genova (Italy). The tournament was played with the old rules and due to the large turnout, the event was played in knock-out games. Luca Parodi was the winner of the evening, winning the final on shots against Federico Solari. Parodi already won his quarter-final on shots against Gian Paolo Ghersi and beat Riccardo Pedemonte in the semi-final (2-0). This is Parodi's first WASPA title. Riccardo Pedemonte won the game for the third place against Renato Villa (1-0).

Besides the tournament, there were good news from the club of Levante telling that a new club will soon join the WASPA circuit. "SUBBUTEO Table Soccer Ponente", a club based in Savona (50 km from Genoa) is recruiting subbuteo fans from all over the west coast of Liguria. Their website can be found here: http://stsponente.blogspot.it

On February 3, 10 players met in the premises of SC Flanders in Hofstade-Zemst for a tournament run under swiss system. It was already the 6th WASPA tournament organized by the only official club in the North of Belgium and as usual, Jos "the boss" Ceulemans took the honors after ending the evening the 12 points (4 wins). Frank Lannoy and Bart Van de Vliet also ended on the podium. SCF President Filip Van Hulle reported "we had 10 participants, 20 games, 40 beers", which give an idea of the great atmosphere in the hall.

First tournament in Parramatta

After a few last minute cancellations, the field was whittled down to 5 for the first ever tournament for "Subbuteo Parramatta" (Australia). Everyone played each other in a league format, which quickly sorted itself into the two frontrunners - Eliot and Peter - pulling away from Billy, Terry and Adrian. heading in to the final round, terry needed a win over billy to pull even with adrian in 3rd place, but the two brothers, as at the last tournament, cancelled each other out in a 2-2 draw.

The final game saw Peter needing a win over Eliot to top the league, as Eliot had a superior goal difference heading in to the game. A scintillating game took place with peter doing most of the attacking but Eliot defending solidly, and looking dangerous on the counter-attack. eliot had never picked up a point against peter and was looking good to hold on after 29 minutes. Then, with 50 seconds left on the clock, Peter finally got one of his custom chips to find the back of the net and celebrated a great victory.

With regular tournament play seeming to improve the quality of all the players, we look forward to heading out to Penrith next month (the exact date will be March 23).

Final table:
Peter Thomas 12 points
Eliot Kennedy 9 points
Adrian Elmer 4 points
Terry Koutzas 2 points
Billy Koutzas 1 point

The tournament in Quévy (Belgium) on sunday had a good field of 14 players. The first round was played in three groups and there was no surprise before the next round. In the quarter-finals, the "usual clasico" between Geoffrey Marain and Vincent Coppenolle ended in favour of Marain during the sudden death. Geoffrey beat Renald Deloose in the semi while Vincent Guyaux beat Alain Flament in the other semi. In the final, it was very close till the last minute but Geoffrey Marain finally scored the winning goal in the last seconds to claim the tile. The first Chicago tournament for Ilias Gikas

Like all good things, the inaugural Windy City Challenge came with great anticipation and went like the wind! We expected up to nine players for our first tournament but, due to various circumstances, we quickly became 6 players.

The venue was amazing for this type of event! There were endless groups of both parents, kids and young adults milling about just outside the roped off area where we were playing. They were amazingly curious about what was going on. All of the players had an opportunity to engage them in conversation about our hobby/sport. We even had one parent/child inquire about purchasing a game set that was on display. He will soon be a member of our Chicago Area Subbuteo Club! Thanks to Sid Bond we had a great demonstration table available that was used for most of the tournament time by kids and curious parents who played with two of my extra teams. Sid and Tony were our best spokespeople spending a lot of time explaining the game and how the group came together.
Left to right: Sid Bond, Mike Ewer, Chris Sweetland, Ilias Gikas and Tim Tumminaro

As to the games, while the points at the top of the table might indicate otherwise, Ilias Gikas ran away with the tournament with 18 goals for and only 2 against. One of those goals against was mine as Ilias and I drew to a 1-1 tie (my high point in the event and the only blemish on Ilias' record). Mike and Tim were solid all afternoon. Ricky and Sid are new to the sport. Otherwise, the following was the final table:

Ilias Gikas - 13 pts
Mike Ewer - 12 pts
Tim Tumminaro - 9 pts
Chris Sweetland - 8 pts
Ricky Alvarez - 3 pts
Sid Bond - 0 pts

I look forward to our next event which is yet to be scheduled. I also want to schedule some introductory / educational sessions at Tony's facility to try to draw some more new players to the pitch.

On February 22, the players of the Hartamas Tigers Subbuteo Club in Kuala Lumpur had an exhibition at the famous Hamleys store. Two tables were set up for demos and friendly games and there will be more demos like this every last saturday of the month from now on. Stadiums were decorated with decals of the Hamleys brand but also with stickers of the current clubs partners (FISTF, WASPA, Singapore Subbuteo Association, Imagine games and the Minister of youth and sports). Coach Mike Dent and five young players were present to show the game to the visitors. The demo had a big impact as the "Star Newspaper" was present to cover to event and Mike Dent was interviewed by the reporter. On every subbuteo product sold in the shop, a sticker mentionned the existence of the Hartamas Tigers club. Well done for a great promotion!

The 5th leg of the WASPA Lazio League 2013/2014 took place on wednesday February 26th in the premises of the club in Rome with 11 players taking part. The big fact of the evening was the winning come-backof Patrizio Lazzaretti who won all his games to win the title. Stefano Tagliaferri was an excellent second. He remained unbeaten and finished with 2 wins and 2 draws. Giuseppe Cascioli too the third place and ended with 7 points. Simone Trivelli, after winning three tournaments in a row, ended only in the fourth place with 6 points. Paolo Barone, Claudio Paolino and Sergio Sassi also ended with the same number of points.

Two players made their first appearance of 2014 tonight in an 8 man field. Matthew Thomas, the older brother of better known Chris Thomas, swept all before him to take his first title of the year. The only resistance came from David Russell who secured second place. newcomer Rob Heseltine struggled again, but is starting to show the signs that the tactics are there now. The mid table battle was won by Ben Staples tonight but it was so close that any of the other players could have got third place.

Date of next NETFA Teesside WASPA tournament will be 28th March 2014

Here is the monthly report of the WASPA circuit (CLICK HERE). Among the important facts of the month, we can mention:
- In February, we had a lot of different tournaments: 25 "regional" tournaments, 1 tournament with the old rules and 2 "promotional" tournament.
- Unfortunately we didn't receive the results of the Hamilton tournament played on February 8.
- We were happy to have the first tournaments in San Francisco, California, in Chicago, Illinois, in Madrid, Spain but also in Parramatta, Australia.
- The tournament in Chicago was the 300th WASPA regional tournament ever.
- Special thanks go to Cyprus with the huge development of the game in Limassol as 23 players attended the last event.
- The tournament in Simi Valley, California was also a FISTF Challenger, which is proving WASPA and FISTF are working together. We are looking forward to have more events under both banners soon.
- We have seen that there are more and more tournaments played under swiss system as it seems it's getting popular among players and organizers.
- Geoffrey Marain won his 20th WASPA title, which is very impressive.
- We have now 1186 players from 32 nations in the ranking!

Improving the WASPA blog: can you let me know which players you would like to be interviewed on the blog? Also, do you think it would help to have a page with the best tournament systems?

Also, I added a page on the WASPA blog called "Project Brazil 2014". If you have pictures of some kits of national football teams (playing the world cup), feel free to drop a line. If you have any other idea of promotion regarding Subbuteo & the football world cup, (for instance setting up a subbuteo tournament under the theme "Brazil 2014" or you are playing subbuteo with the jersey of a national team), let me know by e-mail at vincent.cop@rsca.com
